Microsoft announces new phone-Web syncing service
Microsoft said Friday that it would release a new service that would sync information on a user's cell phone, like contacts, text messages, and photos with a password-protected Web site.
My Phone
With the service, called My Phone, cell phone users will no longer need to worry about losing data stored on their phone, which could be an issue if a phone is lost or breaks. By logging in online, users will immediately be able to restore the information on the same phone or a new one.
Users could also post information on the My Phone Web site that will then appear on their cell phone.
My Phone, which will be free, will only work on phones that run Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6 operating system. Microsoft is offering up to 200 megabytes of free storage on the My Phone site.
Full details will be released at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which will start Feb. 16.
The service is a key part of Microsoft's "software plus services" strategy, which maintains that while there will continue to be a market for software, such as Windows Mobile, it will increasingly be supplemented by online services, such as the new My Phone.
